Have you ever felt like your struggle with sleep goes far beyond just feeling tired? For those living with Narcolepsy, and often other hypersomnolence disorders, the reality is a vast and intricate web of symptoms that can feel invisible to the outside world – and sometimes, even if not actually often times (at least initially, which can be decades) to ourselves.
This post and really what is the ‘Narcolepsy Web’ image that I created, aims to unravel some of the expansive and profound ways these core symptoms manifest, often intertwining and escalating in ways that go unrecognized and unacknowledged. Think of a spider’s web: complex, far-reaching, and often unnoticed until you’re caught in its threads. That’s how pervasive and interconnected these experiences can be.
The web also explores the often-overlooked overlap between the symptoms, highlighting how frequently they can be occurring in unison, yet flying under the radar, alternatively even when fully aware. My hope is to bridge the gap between complex medical terminology and the raw, lived experience, offering a “down-to-earth” perspective.
I’ve come to realize this can be a truly challenging endeavor. The sheer breadth and depth of these experiences make them incredibly difficult to pinpoint in the moment, or even fully comprehend in hindsight. And then there’s the monumental task of simply finding the words to describe what it truly feels like. But I do my best to try and shed some light on this hidden expansively complex world of living with Narcolepsy.
